Renewable Energy Science Fair Project

Decomposing Dairy Waste

Hard
Decomposing Dairy Waste | Science Fair Projects | STEM Projects
Let's explore how temperature affects the decomposition of dairy waste and the production of methane gas. We'll use cow manure, water, and three different temperatures to observe the results.

Hypothesis

The hypothesis is that the container stored at 34 °C will produce the most methane gas.

Method & Materials

You will need three Erlenmeyer flasks, three corks, a nail, three tubes, cow manure, tap water, three measuring cylinders, three basins, a refrigerator, a hot plate, and a ruler.
You will observe the amount of methane gas released into each measuring cylinder every day for 5 days.

Results

The results show that the manure in the Erlenmeyer flask that was stored at 34 °C produced the most methane gas. This proves that the hypothesis was correct.

Why do this project?

This science project is interesting because it explores the effects of temperature on the decomposition of dairy waste and the production of methane gas.

Also Consider

Consider repeating the experiment using rotting vegetables or other organic material.
