Zoology Science Fair Project

Investigating Insects on Trees

Easy
Investigating Insects on Trees | Science Fair Projects | STEM Projects
Come explore the fascinating world of insects! We'll be collecting and observing insects living on three different species of trees. We'll use a dichotomous key to identify the insects and a magnifying lens to observe them. We'll also cool them down in a refrigerator to slow them down so we can observe them more easily.

Hypothesis

The hypothesis is that there will be differences in the kind and quantity of insects that are found on three different species of trees.

Method & Materials

You will locate three different species of trees, tap the branches with a stick to make the insects fall off, count the number of insects on the sheet, capture the insects with collecting vials, and place them in a refrigerator to cool them down.
You will need a white bed sheet, a stick, collecting vials, a bag to carry the vials, tweezers, a sheet of cardboard, sewing pins, access to a refrigerator or large cooler with ice, and a magnifying lens or dissection microscope.

Results

After collecting and observing the insects, we found that there were differences in the kind and quantity of insects that were found on the three different species of trees. The most interesting observation was that some insects were found on all three trees, while others were only found on one or two of the trees.

Why do this project?

This science project is interesting and unique because it allows us to explore the fascinating world of insects and learn about the differences in the kind and quantity of insects that are found on different species of trees.

Also Consider

Variations of this experiment could include collecting insects from different types of trees, such as evergreen trees
