Music and Short-Term Memory
Medium
Does listening to music help you remember what you see? Many people study with music on. But does it actually improve recall?
You show a detailed image to two groups of participants. One group studies the image in silence. The other group listens to their preferred music while studying the same image. After three minutes, you remove the image and ask each person to describe every detail they remember.
Compare the number of details recalled by each group. You can also check whether results differ between genders.
Hypothesis
The hypothesis is that music can facilitate short-term memory.
Method & Materials
You will divide participants into two groups, one that listens to music while studying a picture and one that does not. Then, you will ask them to recall as many details as they can about the picture.
You will need a phone or other music playing device, headphones or earbuds, a collection of songs from different genres, a data sheet, and a detailed image from the web or a magazine.

The results showed that the group that listened to music while studying the picture was able to recall more details than the group that did not. This suggests that music can help with short-term memory.
Why do this project?
This science project is interesting because it explores the connection between music and memory, which is something that has been studied for many years.
Also Consider
Variations of this experiment could include using different types of music or different lengths of time for studying the picture.
