Geology Science Fair Project

Exploring Cave Formations

Medium
Exploring Cave Formations | Science Fair Projects | STEM Projects
Have you ever wondered how stalactites and stalagmites form in caves? This experiment will show you how these amazing formations are created over thousands of years with just a few simple materials.

Hypothesis

The hypothesis is that stalactites and stalagmites form slowly over time due to the dripping of water and the evaporation of minerals.

Method & Materials

You will set up two jars with weights and yarn, and observe the formation of stalactites and stalagmites over time.
You will need two small glass jars, a small plate, wool or cotton yarn, baking soda or Epsom salt, two weights, water, a spoon, paper and pencil, and a camera (optional).

Results

After a few days, the experiment will show deposits of rock in the shape of a stalactite or stalagmite. The limestone rock of the cave, with the help of rainwater, has dissolved and hardened into a fascinating new shape!

Why do this project?

This science project is interesting and unique because it shows how something as simple as dripping water can create something as complex as a stalactite or stalagmite over thousands of years.

Also Consider

Variations of this experiment could include using different types of minerals or different types of rocks to observe the formation of stalactites and stalagmites.
