Mealworm Color Preference

Easy
Mealworm Color Preference | Science Fair Projects | STEM Projects
We wanted to learn about mealworms and what color they prefer. We put four colors of paper in a container and put mealworms in the middle. We found out that mealworms mostly like blue, with 49% of them choosing it first.

Hypothesis

The hypothesis was that a mealworm would prefer one color over the other three.

Method & Materials

You will cut strips of colored paper, tape them to the inside of the container, and place mealworms in the center. You will observe which color the mealworm is facing and record the results.
You will need a topless container, scotch tape, four strips of colored paper (red, blue, yellow, green), and three to five mealworms.

Results

We found that the mealworms mostly chose blue, with 49% of them choosing it first. We also found out that a mealworm usually went to a certain color several times in a row, then went to another color and then back to the first color.

Why do this project?

This science project is interesting because it is a fun and unique way to learn about mealworms and their color preferences.

Also Consider

Experiment variations to consider include using different colors of paper, using more mealworms, and doing more than 30 trials.
