
Triboluminescence from Candy Sparks
Easy
Can you make light just by chewing candy? Crushing a wintergreen Lifesaver between your teeth produces tiny flashes of white light. This effect is called triboluminescence (light made by mechanical force).
Find a dark room with a mirror. Wait about 15 minutes for your eyes to adjust. Then chew a single wintergreen Lifesaver with your lips open. Watch your mouth in the mirror.
Each time a piece of candy cracks, you see a brief spark. The sugar crystals build up opposite electrical charges when they break apart. Electrons jump between the pieces and strike nitrogen molecules in the air. The wintergreen flavoring absorbs that energy and re-emits it as visible light.
