Description
The aim of the two feeding experiments was to compare the effects of the supplementation of food with selenium on the levels of Se-dependent enzymes and thyroid gland hormones, and on the increase of body weight in rats, using two different levels of selenium in the diet in the form of selenite or selenium bound to yeast biomass. If the concentration of selenium in the food was increased from 0.06 to 0.36 µg.g-1, a significant increase in the activity of type I iodothyronine 5'-deiodinase, independent of the form of selenium added, and a slight inhibition of glutathione peroxidase were observed in the group of animals where selenite was supplemented.
