Hand Gestures and Personality

Hard
Hand Gestures and Personality | Science Fair Projects | STEM Projects
Do your hand gestures indicate something about your personality? This experiment will investigate the relation between social influences, personality, and language by focusing on gestures. Subjects will answer questions and their gestures will be recorded to see if there is a correlation.

Hypothesis

The hypothesis is that hand gestures can indicate a person's personality type.

Method & Materials

You will answer two questionnaires and have your gestures recorded while answering questions.
You will need a digital stopwatch, a list of hand and body gestures, and a questionnaire.

Results

The results showed that extroverted subjects tended to have higher total times due to longer response times, but they also used a slightly greater number of gestures. Introverted subjects, on the other hand, took less time to answer the questions and used less gestures while doing so. Certain gestures such as leaning back, playing with hair, the resting of hands on a solid surface, and prolonged contact between hands characterized introverted subjects.

Why do this project?

This science project is interesting because it shows how our personality can be revealed through our gestures.

Also Consider

Experiment variations to consider include testing different age groups or different cultures to see if the results are similar.
