"Venerable Caesar"), possibly from (1) Old Latin *augos (increase) < Proto-Indo-European base *aug- (to increase); or else from (2) Latin avis ("bird," referring to divination by observing bird flights, singing, feeding or entrails) < Proto-Indo-European *awi- (bird); + Latin garrire (to chatter) < PIE base *gar- /*ger- ("to cry," of imitative origin).
