Etymology
Etymology unknown; first appears in standards documents with no explanation. Possibly derived from caret after its similar shape (^), and with -on either from macron or as an augmentative after reanalysis of -et as a diminutive.

- A háček or inverted circumflex; a diacritical mark (ˇ) placed over a letter; on consonants indicates palatalization , and from its shape is used on pinyin vowels to mark the third (falling-rising) tone.
