Abstract

Molly Derrick

The purpose of this experiment is to test the water near animal pens in Batesburg-Leesville for fecal contamination. I hypothesize that the wells located near the animal pens will be more likely to show fecal contamination than the wells that are not near animal pens.

The experiment was really very simple. Samples of water were collected from five different sources and taken to the Batesburg-Leesville Water Treatment Plant for testing. While these samples were being tested five new samples were collected from the same wells and tested by myself and others at Batesburg-Leesville High School using a lactose broth and being incubated.

The results of both testing methods were realatively the same. The wells near animal pens did show positive signs of contamination. Two of these wells tested positive for coliforms and the other one tested positive for fecal contamination (E.coli). The well not located near animal pens did not show any signs of fecal contamination or any other type of coliform.
