If one simply dials it. one gets Directory Assistance for the area code of the originating number. Dialing 1 plus an area code plus 555-1212 will contact Directory Assistance in that area code. Dialing 1-800-555-1212 will contact Directory Assistance for toll-free telephone numbers.
