The 7.62 x 54 mm R rifle cartridge is a Russian design dating from 1891. It was used throughout the Soviet era in machine guns and sniper rifles, and it is still in use by the Russian military in machine guns and rifles. It is the oldest cartridge still in use by any military in the world.
