Abigor

This article is about the band. In demonology Abigor is a Great Duke of Hell better known by the name Eligor (see for additional info.)

Abigor (1993-2003) was an Austrian black metal band formed by Peter Kubik and Thomas Tannenberger. After the release of several demos, original vocalist Tharen left the band and was replaced by Silenius, who recorded vocals for all Abigor releases until the recording of Channeling the Quintessence of Satan during which he opted to leave the band. Thurisaz joined the band and finished recordings on Channeling the Quintessence of Satan. In 2000 Thomas Tannenberger was forced to leave the band due to personal problems, drug abuse and conflicts with other bandmates. After Thomas Tannenberger's departure, Abigor released two more albums before breaking up in 2003.

Early works by Abigor were loosely inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. Their first release, Verwüstung - Invoke The Dark Age, included a song in which the Ring Chant was recited in the Black Speech.

The album cover on Orkblut - The Retaliation was orignially by Lord of the Rings fantasy artist Ian Miller. The album cover on Channeling the Quintessence of Satan was originally by the German printmaker/artist Albrecht Dürer. (The Knight, Death and The Devil, 1514)

Most Abigor releases were released by Napalm Records .

Many members of Abigor are or were previously in several other bands and side projects in both the black metal and ambient genres. Some of which include: Summoning, Dominion III, Dargaard, Grabesmond, Pazuzu, Darkwell, and Siegfried.
