Adamawa State, Nigeria

Adamawa is a state in northeastern Nigeria. It was created from part of Northeastern State in 1976. Until 1991 it was known as Gongola State. Its governor is Boni Haruna , since 1999.

Emirate of Adamawa

Before to be an state in Nigeria was a local native state, mainly in lands currently in Cameroon. The rulers bear the title of Amir (pl. Lamido). Name "Adamawa" came from a local war chief of the Fulani that acted in 1806-1848.

The state born with Modibbo Adama, that joined the jihad of Usmanu bi Foduye in Sokoto (1804). Modibbo Adama came from the region of Gurin and in 1806 received a green flag for led the djihad in his native country of Gurin (now a very small village). In next years Adama conquered many lands and tribes. In 1838 moved his capital to Ribadu , and in 1839 to Joboliwo . In 1841 he founded Yola were he death in 1848. After the european colonization the rulers remained as amirs and later as costumary paramount chiefs, and they follow until present.
