Advise and Consent

Advise and Consent is a political novel by Allen Drury. Published in 1959, it won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1960. The book explores the reactions of those in and around the United States Senate to the controversial nomination of Robert Leffingwell to be United States Secretary of State.

The book's title comes from the United States Constitution's Article II, Sec. 2, cl. 2, which provides that the President of the United States "shall nominate , and by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, shall appoint Ambassadors, other public Ministers and Consults , Judges of the supreme Court, and all other Officers of the United States...." The book was loosely based, in part, on the Alger Hiss controversy.

Drury wrote six sequels, none of which achieved the success of Advise and Consent. A movie adaptation , directed by Otto Preminger and starring Henry Fonda, Lew Ayres, Walter Pidgeon and Charles Laughton, was released in 1962.
