Aeronautical abbreviations

There are maybe several thousands of abbreviations in the aviation traffic (both civil and military, and in the „general aviation“ – mostly at sport aviation ). This list shows only several the most used in the international civil aviation in frame of ICAO.


a/c = aircraft
ACAS = Anti Collision Aircraft System
a/d = aerodrome
amsl = above MSL
a/p = airplane (USA), aeroplane (ICAO)
ATC = Air Traffic Control
ATS = Ait Traffic Services
c/l = RWY centre line
DA/H = Decision Altitude/ Height (rel. to THR)
DER = Departure End of RWY
DME = Distance Measuring Equipment
DR = Dead Reckoning (from: deduced recon )
FAF = Final Approach Fix
FAP = Final Approach Point
FMS = Flight Management System
FMC = Flight Management Computer (on board of a/c)
GP = Glide Path
GSE= Ground Service Equipment
HL = Height Loss
IAF = Initial Approach Fix
IAS = Indicated Airspeed
IF = Intermediate Approach Fix
IFR = Instrument Flight Rules
ILS = Instrument Landing System
IMC = Instrument Meteorological Conditions
ISA = International Standard Atmosphere
LLZ = Localizer (ILS)
MAPt = Missed Approach Point
MDA/H = Minimum Descent Altitude/Height
MM = Middle Marker
MOC = Minimum Obstacle Clearance
MSA = Minimum Sector Clearance
MSL = Mean Sea Level]]
NDB = Non-Directional Beacon
OCA/H = Obstacle Clearance Altitude/Height
OM = Outer Marker
PAR = Precision Approach Radar
PDG = Procedure Design Gradient
QFE = the Q-code for: Atmosheric pressure at a/d elevation (or at THR)
QNH = the Q-code for: Altimeter sub-scale setting to obtain elevation when on the :ground
RDH = Reference Datum Height for ILS
RNAV = Area Navigation (relates to ability navigate in theh space between VOR :stations)
RSR = En-route Surveillance Radar
RWY = Runway
SOC = Start of Climb at Missed Approach
SIDv = Standard Instrument Departure
STAR = Standard Instrument Arrival
TAS = True Airspeed
THR = RWY Threshold
TP = Turning Point at Missed Approach
VFR = Visual flight rules
VHF = Very High Frequency
VOR = VHF omnidirectional radio range (system, device, beacon)
