Aguas Santas Ocaña Navarro
Aguas Santas Ocaña Navarro (born 1963 in Seville, Spain) is the first lady of Honduras. Ocaña Navarro, whose first and middle names mean "holy waters" in Spanish, was raised in the small suburb of Brenes . She has dual Spanish-Honduran citizenship.
Ocaña Navarro is the wife of Honduran President Ricardo Maduro, who had previously been in a 25-year marriage that produced three daughters, Carolina , Cecilia and Lorena , all of whom reside at Honduras' presidential palace. Maduro and Ocaña Navarro married in October 2002.
Ocaña Navarro has been known for trying to improve the ecomomic situation of Honduras' poorest people. She and her husband are currently trying to adopt five children, two of whom had their families murdered. The five children, named Leidy Jackeline, Kevin Josué, Francis, Joan and Jackie, have joined the Maduro-Ocaña family as residents of the presidential palace, while the cases against the alleged killers of Joan and Jackie's families are being seen in court.
Aguas has dedicated much of her time as first lady of Honduras to visiting jailmates, bringing toys and medicines to the poor, and to fighting the abduction of children in Honduras.
Ocaña Navarro created a program, "Cero Niños en las Calles", which is geared towards eliminating children working in Honduras' streets. This program has been severely criticised; her husband's political opponents allege that the organization is merely a vehicle for her husband to be re-elected in Honduras' next elections. Ocaña Navarro continues fighting for children's rights, by denouncing an American organization that was allegedly involved in the selling of slave children by using the internet to lure prospective clients.
During 2003, Ocaña Navarro returned to live in Spain for a short period of time, sparking rumors that she and her husband were about to divorce. According to the rumors, the separation was provocked because Ricardo Maduro named a former girlfriend, Mireya Bates , to be Honduras' Minister of Culture. Soon afterwards, however, Ocaña Navarro returned to her husband's side in Honduras.
In 2004. Ocaña Navarro travelled to Los Angeles, California, where she befriended Tom Cruise and John Travolta, members of the scientology religion. She made them promise to pay a visit to Honduras, so that they could raise awareness among Scientologists about the poor conditions in which many Hondureans live.
When she returned to Spain in 2004 she was hounded by Paparazzi. She declared that she was there to visit political personalities in order to try to garner monetary aid for Honduras' poorest from the Spaniard government.
A poll conducted during 2004 indicated that Ocaña Navarro is more popular in Honduras than her husband.
