Akan, Hokkaido
Akan (阿寒町, -chō) is a town located in Akan district, Kushiro Subprefecture, Hokkaido. As of September 30, 2004 it has an estimated population of 6518 and an area of 739.25 km². The name comes from an Ainu word meaning "Eternal" or "unchanging".
History
- 1887 The main town hall for Akan District is established
- 1923 Becomes a second-class municipality
- 1937 Tsurui Village split off
- 1940 Akan becomes a first-class municipality
- 1957 Akan Village becomes Akan Town
