Al-Mutawakkil III
Al-Mutawakkil III, reigned 1508 to 1516, and 1517, was the last caliph of the Abbasid dynasty. Since the Mongol sack of Baghdad in 1258, the Abbasid caliphs resided in Egypt from 1261, nominal rulers used to legitimize the rule of the Mamelukes, their former slave army. He was deposed briefly towards the end of his reign in 1516 by his predecessor Al-Mustamsik . Al Mutawakil was captured and transported to Constantinople by the Ottoman Sultan Selim I when he defeated the Mameluke Sultanate in 1517, and resigned all claim to the calipahe to him.
