Alan Hale (astronomer)
Alan Hale is an American astronomer.
He co-discovered Comet Hale-Bopp in 1995.
He grew up in Alamogordo, New Mexico. After serving in the US Navy, he worked for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory for two and a half years starting around 1983. He left JPL to attend New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, earning his Ph.D. in astronomy in 1992. Facing a poor job market for astronomers, he founded the Southwest Institute for Space Research .
