Alberta Hunter
Alberta Hunter (1895-1984) was a famous African-American jazz singer, songwriter and nurse.
Her career began in her youth in small time clubs and grew in stardom to become a major performer.
After the death of her mother and career frustrations in the 1950s, she largely abandoned the music industry to train to be a nurse. After 20 years in that new career, she resumed performing after retirement in 1977 and toured regularly until her death in 1984.
Her life and career is depicted in the biographical musical, Cookin' in the Cookery.
