Alf Common
Alf Common (died April 3, 1946 in Darlington) was an English footballer, most famous for being the first player to be transferred for £1000.
He played for local teams in the North East of England before joining Sunderland. He was then transferred to Sheffield United in 1901 for £325, winning the FA Cup with them in 1902. It was also at this time that he won his first England cap.
Then, in the summer of 1904, Common returned to Sunderland for a new record fee of £520. Early in 1905, he broke the transfer record again, by moving to Middlesbrough for £1000. Consequently, Middlesbrough, who had so far been battling against relegation that season, survived the drop.
From there, Alf moved to Woolwich Arsenal in 1910, before going to Preston in 1912.
Alf Common died in a pub he ran in Darlington, in 1946.
