Alkyne trimerisation
A alkyne trimerisation reaction is a [2+2+2] cycloaddition where three alkyne molecules react to form a benzene compound.
In the example of phenyl acetylene a simple catalyst system of cobalt dibromide / zinc / zinc iodine suffices to obtain 99% chemical yield and 97% regioselectivity in favor of reaction product 1.
