Alliston, Ontario

Alliston, Ontario is an Ontario community just about 90 kilometers from Toronto, and about 40 km SW of Barrie., about 18 km W of Cookstown, about 10 km N of Tottenham, about 40 km NE of Orangeville and about 30 km E of Shelburne .It is located in the town of New Tecumseth which is part of Simcoe County. The heart of the community is divided by Highway 89 . It was founded in 1847 by English immigrant William Fletcher .

Alliston is located where the corners of four of the original townships of southern Simcoe County meet, Adjala , Tosorontio , Essa and Tecumseth .

Earl Rowe Provincial Park is located three kilometerswest of Alliston, in Adjala-Tosorontio township. It is one of the largest provincial parks in Southern Ontario

The town grew as a commercial centre for the area farmers and was best known as a potato-growing area. It is still a major industry in the town and is celebrated by the annual Alliston Potato Festival .

A large Honda car manfacturing plant, the biggest industry in Simcoe County , is located in the southeast of Alliston, along Tottenham Road (Simcoe Road 10); under 1 km south of Highway 89 . The plant had a minor fire in the late 1990s. .

The famous citizen of Alliston was Sir Frederick Banting the inventor of insulin. The town's only high school is named in his honour, Banting Memorial High School

The current mayor of Alliston is Mike McEachern .

The surrounding area is made up of farmlands to its east and the south along with the north and west. The forests lie to the northwest, the southwest, the south and to the east along with rolling hills. The urban areastretches from west to east is nearly 3 km and from north to south ranges from 300 m, 600 m to 1 km. Another residential area, adjacent to a major hotel the Nottawasaga Inn is located 5 km east of Alliston is to the east. A river is situated to its east. The CP rail (Toronto - Parry Sound - Sudbury) runs to its west with a small freight yard for Honda vehicles. Additional housing and commercial development has been built since in the mid-1990s in the town's southwest. A future urban developments in the northeast and north of Alliston may increase the population to nearly 17,000 to 20,000.

Alliston has a two public and two Catholic elementary schools, one public high school, a post office, four banks, a small movie theatre, the Circle Theatre , a train station and several parks.
