Alma mater
Alma mater is a term of academia.
Etymology
"Alma mater" is derived from the Latin term for "nourishing mother". It is frequently used in the English language in reference to the university or college a person has attended. In American English, it is also in reference to a high school or elementary school. Alma mater is sometimes used as a title of a school's anthem or song. The word "matriculation" is derived from the Latin root word mater. The term suggests that the students are fed knowledge and taken care of by the educational institution. "Alma Mater" is also the title of a song by Chicago, Moonspell and of a different one by Alice Cooper; Morrissey also punned on the phrase for his 1997 single "Alma Matters."
