Aluísio Azevedo, (1857-1913) in São Luís do Maranhão of northern Brazil, is known for his numerous literary works pertaining to the life, society, and culture of Brazil in his time. Perhaps his most accomplished work was The Slum, a detailed novel depicting life in Brazil in the late Nineteenth century. Though he gave up literature around 1897 when appointed into the Brazilian Academy of Letters and sold the rights of his works, his literary accomplishments continue to be prominent in Brazilian literature today.
