Anatoly Vasilyevich Lunacharsky

Anatoly Vasilyevich Lunacharsky (November 23, 1875December 26, 1933) was a Russian Soviet literary critic, Bolshevik revolutionary and Communist political figure. He was the first education minister of the USSR between 1917 and 1929, the official title of which was 'commissar of popular enlightenment', a role which covered both education and culture. After the revolution he saved many historical buildings which the Bolsheviks wanted to destroy by arguing for their architectural importance. He was removed from his position in 1929 in accordance with Stalin's orders. He died in Menton, France.
