Andrew Grove

Andrew Stephen Grove (born September 2, 1936) is co-founder and chairman of Intel Corporation.

Grove was born "Gróf András" in Budapest, Hungary (note: in Hungary, the family name comes first), and growing up he was known to friends as "Andris". He earned a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from the City College of New York in 1960 and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1963. He worked at Fairchild Semiconductor before becoming the fourth employee at the nascent Intel Corporation. He became Intel's president in 1979, its CEO in 1987, and its Chairman and CEO in 1997. His first book, Physics and Technology of Semiconductor Devices (John Wiley and Sons, Inc., 1967) has been used at many leading universities in the United States. His book, High Output Management (Random House, 1983 and Vintage, 1985) has been translated into eleven languages, and has recently been updated and reissued by Vintage Books. His book titled, One-on-One With Andy Grove, was published by G.P. Putnam's Sons in June, 1987 and Penguin in 1989. His book, Only the Paranoid Survive, was published by Doubleday in September of 1996. His latest book, Swimming Across, was published in November, 2001 by Time Warner Books. An author of articles in Fortune, The Wall Street Journal, and the New York Times, he has written a weekly column on management which was carried by several newspapers, and a column on management for Working Woman magazine. He relinquished his CEO title in May 1998 and remained Chairman of the Board until November, 2004. Grove continues his work at Intel as a senior advisor.
