Andy Brandt

Andy Brandt is a former Ontario politician and MPP for the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party. Brandt was elected to the provincial legislature in 1981 after serving as Mayor of Sarnia, Ontario. In 1983 he was appointed Minister of the Environment in the Cabinet of William Davis and served as Minister of Industry and Trade in the short-lived government of Frank Miller. Brandt was re-elected MPP in 1985 and 1987 when the Tories served in opposition. When Tory leader Larry Grossman was defeated in the 1987 election, Brandt was chosen interim leader of the party, a position he held until Mike Harris was elected party leader in May 1990. Brandt did not run in that fall's election and was subsequently appointed chairman and CEO of the Liquor Control Board of Ontario, the agency that owns and operates Ontario's publicly owned beer and liquor stores. Brandt retained that position when Mike Harris became Premier and has been successful in modernizing the LCBO's operations as well as convincing the provincial government not to privatize the service.
