Angelic Layer

Angelic Layer (エンジェリックレイヤー Enjerikku Reiyā) is an anime and manga series released by the manga team CLAMP. The manga is published in Japan by Kadokawa Shoten. The manga is published in English by TOKYOPOP.

The main character of Angelic Layer is Misaki Suzuhara (鈴原みさき Suzuhara Misaki), a sixth grader who just moved in with her aunt, Shouko Asami (浅見 祥子 Asami Shōko) in Tokyo. While in Tokyo she learns of an amazingly popular toy/game called Angelic Layer, where people buy and custom-design dolls known as Angels, and then can control their every movement mentally on a field called a "layer."

Misaki creates an angel named Hikaru and goes on to compete in the popular angel fighting tournaments. Along the way, she makes a number of friends and pursues her ultimate goal of finding her mother, whom she has not seen since kindergarten. Misaki eventually learns that her mother has an unexpected connection to the Angelic Layer phenomenon. The manga series is set a few years before Chobits, another CLAMP work which is a direct sequel to Angelic Layer. In the anime, no references between Chobits and Angelic Layer are known.
