Angra Pequeña
Angra Pequeña was the former name for the city of Luderitz in Namibia. Discovered by Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias in 1487, who named the area the Portuguese words for "small cove", the area was made a trading station by German trader Adolf Luderitz in 1883, who then sought a German protectorate over the station and the surrounding area. Under the belief that Britain was about to claim the area as a British protectorate, Chancellor Otto von Bismarck proclaimed a German protectorate over the district on August 7 1884. Angra Pequeña then became the base for Germany's conquest of what became German South West Africa.
