Anil Biswas

Anil Biswas (Anilda) (July 7, 1914 - May 31, 2003) was one of the early pioneers of Indian film music and one of the chief architects of the Golden Age of film music (1945 to 1955) and established the art of playback singing.

Born in 1914 in a small village in East Bengal, an area that is now in Bangladesh, he sang and composed music at concerts at a young age but set his music aside in his teens to become a revolutionary against British colonial rule. After being repeatedly jailed, he fled to Calcutta, where he composed music for plays in which he also sang and acted.

He attracted the attention of the film director Hiren Bose, who persuaded him in 1934 to move to Bombay. He met with quick success and soon was recognized as the leading composer of the day. He also received critical acclaim for blending elements of Hindustani classical music and folk music from all parts of the country into his music. His music was intrinsically ethnic.

He composed the music for the Hindi film Kismet (1943) which had a record run for over five years in many theatres. It remained Hindi cinema's most successful film for a long time. The music of the film continues to enthrall new generations of music lovers.

Anilda, as he was fondly called, also composed for such hits as Jwar Bhata, Milan, Aurat, Anokhaa pyaar, Taraanaa, Aaraam, Raahi and Choti choti baaten. The last named film released in 1963 was also Anilda's last Hindi film. Dissatisfied with the emerging music trends and the ways of film making, he left Bombay for Delhi where he headed the All India Radio music and also chaired at the Jawaharlal Nehru University.

Anilda also gets the credit for having mentored the careers of many legendary film music personalities like Lata Mangeshkar, Mukesh, Talat Mahmood , Parul Ghosh, Prem Dhawan and others.

Anilda passed away in Delhi on May 31, 2003.
