Anthony Pawson

Anthony James Pawson, O.C., Ph.D., F.R.S.C., (born 1953) is a Canadian scientist whose research has revolutionized the understanding of signal transduction, and the molecular mechanisms by which cells respond to external cues.

He is the Director of Research at the Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute of Mount Sinai Hospital and Professor in the Department of Medical Genetics and Microbiology at the University of Toronto both of which he joined in 1985.

Born in the United Kingdom, he received an MA in biochemistry from the University of Cambridge and received a PhD in 1976 from King's College London. From 1976 to 1980 he pursued postdoctoral work at the University of California at Berkeley. From 1981 to 1985, he was Assistant Professor at the University of British Columbia.

Honours

  • In 1994 he was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada
  • In 1998 he received the Dr H.P. Heineken Prize for Biochemistry and Biophysics.
  • In 1998 he was awarded the Flavelle Medal for meritorious achievement in biological science by the Royal Society of Canada.
  • In 2000 he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada.
