Anthony Perruzza
Anthony Perruzza is a politician in Ontario, Canada. He served as a New Democratic Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1990 to 1995.
Perruzza was a councillor in North York before moving to provincial politics, and was generally regarded as an ally of fellow councillor Howard Moscoe. He was elected to the Ontario legislature in the 1990 provincial election, defeating Liberal incumbent Laureano Leone by more than 5,000 votes in the North York riding of Downsview .
The NDP won an unexpected majority in this election, and Perruzza served as a parliamentary assistant to a number of cabinet ministers over the next five years
In 1994, Perruzza was one of twelve NDP MPPs who voted against a government bill that would have extended spousal benefits to same-sex couples. This defection caused the bill to be defeated, and cost Perruzza support within his own party. He lost to Liberal Annamarie Castrilli by only 360 votes in the 1995 provincial election, having been abandoned by many NDP campaign workers in Toronto.
Perruzza has unsuccessfully campaigned for Toronto City Council on two occasions since his provincial defeat. In the 2000 Toronto election and the 2003 Toronto election, Perruzza was a candidate for city council in Ward 8 (which includes the troubled Jane & Finch region). Notwithstanding his previous difficulties with the Toronto NDP organization, he remained a member of the NDP, and was endorsed by the city's Labour Council and the left-leaning Now Magazine on both occasions. This was not enough, however; he was narrowly defeated by incumbent councillor Peter Li Preti on both occasions.
Perruzza is currently the executive assistant to councillor Maria Augimeri.
