This Hungarian archdiocese is a unique one in the sense that it represents two cities, Esztergom and Budapest. The two being one diocese is because in Hungary's early history Esztergom was the capital of the country. The diocese was founded in the 10th century. Its name from Archdiocese of Esztergom was changed on 31 May 1993.
Its current archbishop is His Eminence dr. Péter Cardinal Erdő. He received this position after the retirement of His Eminence dr. László Cardinal Paskai.
