Are You Afraid of the Dark? (television)

Are You Afraid of the Dark? is a Nickelodeon television series. The original series ran between August 15, 1992 and February 3, 1996, and a revived series with new directors, new writers, and a new cast ran from 1999 to 2000.

Both Canadian-produced series revolved around a group of adolescents who referred to themselves as "The Midnight Society"; each night, one would tell a scary story to the group. (The actual story, rather than the telling thereof, would be displayed to the TV viewer.) Invariably, these stories' titles frequently began with "The Tale of the...", such as in "The Tale of the Phantom Cab" or "The Tale of the Pinball Wizard", as well as "The Tale of the Quiet Librarian" (which is about the ghost of a dead school librarian who insists that all children are supposed to keep silent everywhere). The themes usually revolved around paranormal phenomena, including ghosts, magic, and haunted houses.

Sources of these tales varied; many were adaptations of public domain fairytales and short stories. For example, "The Tale of the Twisted Claw" is considered to be an adaptation of W.W. Jacobs's short story "The Monkey's Paw".
