Arthur Baker (financier)

Arthur Sidney Baker (1951–) is a chartered management accountant and chartered company secretary who developed three pub chains and a chain of casinos in the United Kingdom.

Baker was finance director of Mercury Taverns PLC, a company formed with venture capital and debt amounting to £26 million, which was used to purchase 111 public houses from Bass. Mercury Taverns was sold to Pubmaster PLC for £34 million.

He was also the finance director of The Little Pub Company Limited. Along with two friends he developed this tenanted and managed house pub company based in and around England's Black Country. The chain was developed from nothing to 21 freehold public houses and was sold to Ushers of Trowbridge for £6.5 million in 1998.

The Little Pub Company founders also developed and sold the Fiddle and Bone pub in Birmingham city centre. It became a popular music venue and was voted best new pub in the United Kingdom by The Good Pub Guide.

In 1999, after the sale of The Little Pub Company Limited, Baker joined Close Brothers Investment Limited , buying and operating 35 managed public houses for wealthy individuals as Enterprise Investment Schemes. His last fund raising for Close Brothers raised £15.3 million as equity for Traditional Free Houses PLC.

In 2001 Baker joined the board of Blue Chip Casinos and helped to raise £8.5 million privately to fund its launch. The company opened themed casinos at Dudley, Wolverhampton, Warley and Walsall.

Baker was appointed executive chairman of Innobox PLC in June 2003 when the board of this investment company decided to move out of the packaging sector into the pub trade, where they had no experience. Innobox acquired managed pubs and hotels with fewer than 30 bedrooms. It sought pubs with spare land available for development.
