Assaye
The Battle of Assaye took place on September 23, 1803, during the Second Anglo-Maratha War.
General Sir Arthur Wellesley with 4,500 British and Indian troops, routed the army of Sindhia of Gwalior, which was over 40,000 strong (30,000 cavalry and 10,000 infrantry). All of the camp equipment and 98 guns were taken. Wellesley always considered this the bloodiest action, for the numbers engaged, that he ever fought. The British loss amounted to 1,566, or more than one-third of Wellesley's entire force.
