Association for India's Development
The Association for India's Development, Inc. (AID) is a voluntary non-profit organization, founded in 1991, committed to promoting sustainable, equitable and just development in India, by working with grassroots organizations in India. AID supports and initiates activities in various interconnected aspects of society including education, labor rights, natural resources, health, women's empowerment and the general concept of social justice.
Legal status of AID in the USA
AID, Inc. was registered with the US Federal Government as a 501(C)(3) non-profit charitable corporation in September 2003, with federal Tax-ID 04-3652609. Before September 2003, AID was registered as un incorporated association (with a different Tax-ID). AID accounts are audited by an independent Certified Public Accountant, as per IRS regulations. AID offers to provide further documents and information on request, or for the cost of copying and postage, this information can be obtained from the Secretary of State.
As of 2004, in the USA, had 36 chapters and about 500 volunteers. In India it had 4 chapters and 4 full-time employees (Jeevan Sathis). As of 2004, it had supported 365 projects, had about 100 ongoing projects, covered 18 states in India, and had made visits to most of the project sites.
Reaction to the Tsunami of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake
Previous to the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake, of which the tsunami hit the eastern coast of southern India, in particular Tamil Nadu, AID had already been working in these areas. It arrived at the affected locations within 12 hours after the first wave with relief supplies. AID is now working with DYFI (Democratic Youth Federation of India, the youth wing of the Communist Party of India (Marxist)), AIDWA (All India Democratic Womens Association, the women's wing of the CPIM) and several other Christian missionary groups to provide relief and rehabilitation to the affected people.
