Attur is a small town in Salem District, and can be reached by an hour's drive. It is the capital of Attur Taluk, which is, principally, an agricultural area. The famous rice variety called: "Attur Kichidi Samba" is one of the best known varieties of rice in the world, and is very tasty. Unfortunately, consequent to the Green Revolution, and excessive use of fertilizers and pesticides, this variety is no more available. Attur is also famous for tapioca (casava roots). There are consequently, several tapioca-based industries which manufacture products like "javvarisi" (sago) and send them all over India.
