Avak crater

Avak is a meteor crater in Alaska, United States, at 71°15'N, 156°38'W (approximately 12 km from the town of Barrow.

It is 12 km in diameter and the age is estimated to be greater than 95 million years. The crater is partly on land and partly in the ocean; the land portion is not exposed to the surface, being covered by sediment from the Pleistocene and Pliocene eras.

The crater was drilled in 1951 and 1952 to a depth of 1225m, and the cores that were obtained confirmed an an impact origin. The crater is believed to contain commercially viable deposits of hydrocarbons.
