Azaria Chamberlain

Azaria Chantel Loren Chamberlain (June 11, 1980 - August 17, 1980) was born at the Mount Isa Maternity Hospital in Australia, daughter of parents Lindy Chamberlain and Michael Chamberlain. She weighed nearly 3kg at birth and was exactly 47cm long.

Disappearance

Main article: Azaria Chamberlain disappearance

On August 16, 1980, Michael and Lindy Chamberlain took their family on a camping trip near Uluru, Central Australia. On the night of August 17, Lindy Chamberlain reported that two month old Azaria was missing from her bassinet and had been taken by a dingo. Despite extensive searches, her body was never found.

While the initial coroner's inquest concluded in favour of Lindy Chamberlain's account, she was tried for Azaria's murder and convicted on October 29, 1982. The trial was one of the most publicised in Australia's history. On September 15, 1988, Lindy Chamberlain's conviction was overturned on appeal after new evidence came to light.
