Balfour Declaration

The name Balfour Declaration is applied to two key British government policy statements associated with Conservative statesman Arthur Balfour.

The first, better-known, is the Balfour Declaration, of 1917: An official letter from the British Foreign Office headed by Arthur Balfour, Britain's official Foreign Secretary (from December 1916 to October 1919), to Lord Rothschild, who had once been a member of the British Parliament (from 1899 to 1910). It has been accepted, especially by Israel, as Britain's commitment to, and legal acceptance and granting of, the establishment of a Jewish national home in the British Mandate of Palestine formerly controlled by the Ottomans.
The second, lesser-known, Balfour Declaration, of 1926, recognised the self-governing Dominions of the British Empire as fully autonomous states.
