Baron Berners

The Barony of Berners is a barony by writ in the Peerage of England. In 1455, it was created for Sir John Bouchier. At the death of the seventh Baron, the barony fell into abeyance between several coheirs. However, by 1711, all of the coheirs but one died, and the surviving heir, Katherine Bokenham, became Baroness Berners. At her death, the barony again became abeyant. Several years later, the Sovereign called it out of abeyance in favour of Robert Wilson, upon whose death the barony again fell into abeyance. Only weeks later, however, the Sovereign made another termination of the abeyance, this time in favour of Henry Wilson. The Barony became abeyant for the fourth time in 1992 upon the death of the fifteenth Baroness, but the abeyance was again terminated in 1995 in favour of Pamela Kirkham, who still holds the title.
