The Barracuda is the next generation of nuclear attack submarine of the French Marine Nationale, designed by the DCN to replace the Rubis class submarines .

They are designed with the technology of the Triomphant class (the pump propeller is a distinctive feature). They will be fitted with cruise missiles to allow long-range and deep strikes. Their missions include anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare, land attack, intelligence gathering, crisis management and special operations.

6 nuclear attack submarines of the Barracuda class are planned; 2 should be ordered between 2003 and 2008, and the first commissioning is expected for 2012
