Bascarsija Nights
Bašćaršija Nights is the biggest festival in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Occurring annually from July 1 to July 31, the festival exhibits various aspects of the nation's culture. This includes preformances of classical music, rock and roll, folk music, theatre, various exhibits, folklore, books, film, children programing, opera, ballet, and much more.
Labeled a "Cultural Manifestation", it is the largest and most popular such event in the country. The preformances take place outside, in Sarajevo's Old Town district (Specifically the famous Bašćaršija neighborhood), and entrance is completely free. It is estimated that some 150,000 people come to see the preformances, of which there are usually between 40 and 50 in number.
The first day is always a preforamnce by the Sarajevo philharmonic orchestra, which is attended by numerous city and Canton politicians.
The festival has resulted in a number of memorable moments and events in its 8 year history. A concert by popular Bosnian singer Dino Merlin concluded the festival in 2000. It was held in Stadium Koševo and sold out the venue. The first Bosnian opera in history was part of the festival in 2003. A preformance by local rockers Zabranjeno Pusenje was also part of that years festivities.
