Bat Yam

Bat Yam (בת ים) is a city in Israel, on the central coastal strip, just south of Tel Aviv, and part of the metropolis known as Gush Dan, in the Tel Aviv District.

Bat Yam was established in 1926 as "Bayit Va-Gan" (House and Garden), a neighbourhood dedicated to orthodox Jews. However, the original plan did't come true. During the 1936 riots, Bat-Yam was attacked by Arab gangs from its northern neighbour Jaffa and was almost abbandoned. This almost happened again in the 1948 war. In the first decades of Israel's independence Bat Yam grew due to mass immigration, becoming a city in 1958. Its key feature is its beautiful beach, attracting many tourists every summer. It has currently 134,000 residents (2002).

Bat Yam has been since the fall of the Soviet Union one of the centers in Israel where Jewish refuges from the former Soviet Union (CCCP) came to reside resulting in a steep increase to it's population of newly arrived immigrants.
