In the fictional Star Trek universe, the Battle of Maxia was an altercation in 2355 between a Federation ship and a Ferengi vessel; it was the first contact between the two nations. While in the Maxia Zeta solar system, the USS Stargazer (NCC-2893), under the command of Captain Jean-Luc Picard, was attacked by a then-unidentified alien spacecraft, disabling the Stargazer's deflector shields. Picard was able to destroy the craft through what was henceforth known as "the Picard Maneuver": the Stargazer made a short warp jump toward the Ferengi ship, outrunning the light of the image of itself at its former location. The Ferengi were momentarily distracted by what appeared to be a second ship coming out of warp, providing the Stargazer with enough time to destroy the enemy vessel. The Battle of Maxia resulted in the loss of the Ferengi ship and all of its hands as well as crippling damage to the Stargazer; the crew abandoned the ship in lifeboats and shuttlecraft and were recovered ten weeks later. After the loss of the Stargazer, Captain Picard was court-martialed but cleared of wrongdoing.
