Battle of Morat

The Battle of Morat was a battle in the Burgundian Wars fought June 22, 1467 between Charles, Duke of Burgundy and a Swiss army at Morat (German: Murten), about 30 kilometers from Bern.

Having rebuilt his army after his defeat at the Battle of Grandson on March 3, Charles laid siege to Morat, hoping the Swiss would attack. The Swiss garrison had only 2000 men, with small reinforcements from the Duke of Lorraine and the Alsatians. Against them, Charles had about 10 times their number and his redoubtable artillery.

Taking cover in the woods, the Swiss army was able to cut off any possiblity of retreat. The Swiss inflicted heavy casualties on the duke's trapped army and gave them no quarter.

Charles escaped to Morges, and then to Pontarlier, where he stayed for months, reportedly in a deep depression. He returned to the battlefield at the Battle of Nancy , where he was killed.
